ATV is American University's student-run television station. ATV produces nearly a dozen original television programs ranging from coverage of campus and local news to talk shows on various topics to comedy and entertainment.

ATV is an exclusively student-run organization. All of their programs are hosted, produced, edited, and managed by students, and students are also responsible for the management of the station, its studios, and its technical equipment. ATV’s offices, studio, control room, equipment, and broadcast control are all located on the second floor of the Mary Graydon Center in MGC 256, a location that they also share with WVAU and AWOL. ATV is a member organization of the AU Student Media Board.

ATV’s programming airs 24 hours a day on campus channels 2 and 15, and also via a uStream channel on their website, www.auatv.com. They also publish their shows as video podcasts, and publish highlights from our shows as clips on YouTube. ATV also produces promotional videos for other student organizations at American University, most notably the “Fireside Chat” series for the AU Student Government.

ATV was first established in 1979, under the name WAVE-TV. In the Spring of 1981, it was fully recognized by the AU Student Confederation and was authorized to broadcast its programming to the community. ATV has moved three times in its era at American University, but has been in its present MGC location since 2002.

The majority of the students who work at ATV are majors in either Broadcast Journalism or Film, but SPA and SIS majors have also contributed their time as political pundits or world news analysts. ATV provides a unique hands-on experience for students interested in working in a film/television environment by providing equipment and training and regular film work in the field or in-studio for students regardless of their class or school.

ATV has had several notable alumni in its ranks over the years, including "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory and Comedy Central host Chris Wylde. Recent students have also gone on to jobs and internships at NBC, CNN, and FOX News.
