Today 9:00 am - 9:00 pm: Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Collection

University Archives and Special Collections is featuring an exhibit of 17th- and 18th-century Japanese woodblock prints in honor of the Cherry Blossom Festival Centennial. The collection of books mostly covers the Tokugawa Period of Japan, spanning the seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. The most astonishing part of the Manrakudo is its collection of old woodblock prints, some of which may date as far back as the eighteenth century. In particular, the collection features brilliant prints by the Japanese artist Hiroshige, and have retained the vivacity of their color and their exquisite detail.

Come and see this remarkable exhibit on the third floor of Bender Library, outside Archives, through April 25.

Today 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: Winter 2012 First Floor Exhibitions: Anil Revri and Gabarron's Roots

Anil Revri: Faith and Liberation through Abstraction
Saturday, January 28-Sunday, April 15
Anil Revri?s paintings function as aids to meditation, while at the same time the process of their creation is itself an act of meditation. They are beautiful, their craft is breathtaking, but their success depends on whether they further us, and the artist, along in the process of our own enlightenment.

Gabarron?s Roots
Saturday, January 28-Sunday, April 15
The sculptures and paintings of Cristobal Gabarron have been seen in hundreds of exhibitions around the world, but never in Washington, D.C. Here, his vibrantly colored sculptures are larger than life, yet human in scale and effect; his painted tondos evoke archaeological and zoological mysteries.

Raoul Middleman: City Limits
Saturday, January 28-Saturday, March 18

Baltimore maestro Raoul Middleman?s nudes are not pretty-- they are sagging, dimpled, and real. His cityscapes reveal the underbelly of post-industrial rot, his narrative paintings give contemporary life to his personal obsessions. They are intelligent, messy, and utterly masterful.
