Eagle Summit

New Student Orientation 2012

Eagle Summit, American University's new student orientation for first-year students, is designed to welcome new students and their families to American University. During the Summit, you will learn about academics and campus life at American University, while meeting other new students as well as current AU students who will help you acclimate to the university. In addition to meeting with your advisor and finalizing your course schedule you will learn your way around campus, spend a night in a residence hall, take necessary placement exams, receive your AU ID Card and much, much more. By the time you leave the Summit, you will be well on your way to success!

New Student Programs hosts several orientation programs throughout the summer for students entering American University in the fall semester. Starting in late March, you (the student) will receive detailed information about Eagle Summit in the mail, via USPS, after you submit your Enrollment Agreement and tuition deposit.

Class Registration

In mid-May your advisor will send a link that provides information about registering for classes and completing other important academic tasks using the online Freshman Guide to Academic Programs and Registration. As soon as you receive that email, please access the guide and follow the instructions to complete it by the deadline: May 24 for early-decision students and May 30 for all others.

Note that you won’t register for classes during orientation. Completion of the guide will allow your academic advisor to review your proposed course selection for your fall 2012 classes, and–if appropriate–clear you to register. You’ll then register for your courses using the online AU Registration System. During the Academic Advising session on the second day of orientation, an advisor will confirm your course registration and give you a final copy of your class schedule.

Math Placement

All new students are required to take an online math placement exam. The results determine course placement in mathematics, so students will need their placement scores to register for any math classes. The exam must be completed by Tuesday, May 22, for your advisor to clear you for course registration.
