Parent & Family Orientation

Welcome to the AU Community! The Office of Orientation, Transition and Retention is responsible for ensuring that all new students make a smooth transition to the university. We know that your student's successful transition is important to you and that you'll have your own questions and concerns. To meet your needs and help you better support your student, we offer two types of parent and family orientation programs, depending on your student's admit status. Registration instructions will be sent to your student.


During each summer first-year orientation program, we host a parallel orientation program for parents and families. You'll have the opportunity to meet with university administrators, learn about the many services offered at American, and learn about AU's academic programs. By the time orientation is over, you'll feel much more comfortable leaving your student to begin his or her academic career at American University. As one parent put it, "Orientation was first class! Thanks for making us feel welcome. AU is definitely the place to be."  

Program Details: 

Check-in, in past years, was available from 7:15 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. on the first morning. The program will run until about 8:30 p.m. that evening for parents and families. The second day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude around 4:30 p.m., depending on what you and your student need to accomplish before leaving campus. 

Program Fees: 

  • $85 per Family Member (over the age of 12)  
  • $40 per Family Members (under 12) 
  • Plus: $65 per person/per night in double occupancy overnight accommodations (optional) $80 per night for single occupancy overnight accommodations (optional) 

On Campus Housing Accommodations: Parents who opt to stay on campus will be staying in the new East Campus suites. There are single and double occupancy rooms - both room types have their own private bathrooms. Students will be staying in south campus in a traditional residence hall with other new students, orientation staff and residence life staff. Students are required to stay on campus the first night of Eagle Summit. We offer an option for students (and parents) to check into their residence halls the night before Eagle Summit, but the night before - called "early arrival" - is not required. Please note the guest housing and early arrival are only available for June & July Eagle Summits.

Parents and family members of transfer students are invited to attend Transfer Transitions with their student. Transfer Transitions is a one-day orientation program, specifically crafted for students who are transferring to AU for the fall semester.

Program Details: 

The Transfer Transitions schedule will be posted in late summer. However, in past years check-in was available from 8:00 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. and the program concluded around 6:00 p.m. 

Program Fees: 

  • $40 per Family Member (over the age of 12) 
  • $20 per Family Member (under the age of 12)
