Note: All F-1 and J-1 international students who are enrolling at American University for the first time or for a new program are required to bring their passport, I-94 and I-20 or DS-2019 to International Student Services (ISS). Non-native speakers of English, regardless of citizenship, must take an English language proficiency test before they register. International students in F-1 or J-1 student status should refer to specific instructions for international students. International students in F-1 or J-1 student status are not eligible to enroll as nondegree students.

Be sure that you have met all the prerequisites and obtained all required approvals and authorizations for the courses for which you intend to register. You will only be permitted to register for courses for which you have met the prerequisite or received a waiver.

In addition to meeting course prerequisites, all students wishing to take courses in Applied Music (Department of Performing Arts), Kogod School of Business, and School of Communication must obtain approval from the department or school. Students must obtain all permissions or prerequisite waivers from the appropriate departments prior to registration.

Admission to courses is subject to space availability and confirmation of eligibility. Validation of registration is subject to settlement of your student account within the stipulated period for payment of tuition and fees. Failure to comply with payment schedules may result in cancellation of registration and will necessitate reregistering for courses. Note: students will not be allowed to re-enroll in course sections that have closed.

Math Placement for New Undergraduate Students

All new undergraduate students are required to take an on-line math placement exam. The results determine course placement in mathematics and students will need a placement score in order to register for any math classes. The exam, which consists of basic math and algebra problems, will be available starting Monday, April 2 and must be completed prior to registration. First Time Freshman

In mid-May your advisor will send a link that provides information about registering for classes and completing other important academic tasks using the online Freshman Guide to Academic Programs and Registration. As soon as you receive that email, please access the guide and follow the instructions to complete it by the deadline: May 24 for early-decision students and May 30 for all others. Completion of the guide will allow your academic advisor to review your proposed course selection for your fall 2012 classes, and – if it’s correct – clear you to register. You will then register for your courses using the AU Registration System.

First time Transfers

Your AU school or college will mail or send an e-mail to you with information about registering for classes and completing other important academic tasks. If you do not receive this information, please contact the advising office of the school or college that houses your intended major.

First time Graduate Students

You are eligible to register for Fall courses beginning Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at midnight. (New SOC and SPA Graduate Students may register beginning April 16).

First time Non-Degree Students

(Fall non-degree registration begins on Wednesday, August 1, 2012). The registration process varies by school/college.  Please use the appropriate link and review the following for school specific information.

Special Departmental Requirements for Non-Degree Students: Departmental approval must be obtained for nondegree registration in courses at the 600 or 700 level.

School of International Service (SIS): Approval must be obtained for all courses at the 500, 600, or 700 level.

Kogod School of Business (KSB): Approval must be obtained for nondegree registration in all KSB courses. In addition, nondegree students must demonstrate that prerequisites have been met. If prerequisites have been completed at a college or university other than American University, students must provide copies of appropriate transcripts. Graduate students must have satisfactory GMAT scores, and a satisfactory grade point average in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Students must provide copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts and GMAT results.
